Steps to Add a Wrangler Lifting Kit to Your Jeep

You've probably heard about External link opens in new tab or windowJeep Wrangler leveling lift kits in Illinois. Many Jeep owners are off-road enthusiasts. Lifting kits are used to allow for larger tires and higher ground clearance. This combination makes tackling trails and rough terrain significantly easier. Of course, installing a lift kit isn't something you do on a whim. You need to choose the right kit and install it correctly. Luckily, the steps are relatively easy to follow if you're handy with tools and know your way around a Jeep.

        Jeep on Dirt Terrain

Choosing a lift kit is the first step. There are different types, but the majority are either 2.5-inch or 4-inch kits. Generally, the 2.5-inch kit is plenty. The 4-inch kits are more aggressive, but they do provide added ground clearance. Unless you really need it, a 4-inch kit is probably too much. A 2.5-inch lift kit allows for 35-inch tires and is able to handle off-road demands quite well. The most important thing to remember is to purchase a lift kit with detailed instructions. If this is your first time installing a lift kit, the instructions are essential.

        2. Raise and Secure

Before you can insert the spacers, you need to raise and secure the Jeep. The vehicle should be sitting level on jack stands or a hydraulic lift. Once this is done, each body mount bolt is loosened. You can use a floor jack to lift each point of the frame where a body mount is located. You only need a few inches to put the body blocks in place and secure them with the hardware provided in the kit. Obviously, the instructions accompanying the kit should walk you through this process. Be certain that the Jeep is secure and stable the entire time. This usually requires around 6-8 hours to complete. Don't try to rush things. Take a break if you need to.

        3. Spacers

The spacers provide the actual lift of the lift kit. After everything has been bolted securely, you'll have the Jeep on the ground again. At this point, it should be easy enough to see the extra clearance that's available for the larger tires. The coil-spring spacers fit into the factory coil-over shock assembly to aid with leveling the front-to-rear height.

At this point, it's usually recommended that you bring your Jeep to a mechanic. Mechanics have spring compression tools to add the leveling spacer to the top of the coil mount. This should be a minimal expense, but it's absolutely worth it to know that this is handled correctly. Any misalignment or improper adjustment could damage your vehicle over time. With a skilled mechanic, it won't take very long. Some shops even specialize in installing lift kits, so they absolutely know what they're doing.

With a higher frame comes an extended reach. The factory steering needs to be lengthened with the machined extension from the kit. This securely attaches the upper and lower steering shafts to allow for the proper geometry and length.

        5. Gap Guards

The gap guards seal the additional space between the body and the frame. They're positioned so the holes in the guards can be used to help drill into the factory-installed inner fenders. After this, the snap buttons secure them into position.

        6.  Add Tires

Now comes the fun part. You can add your 35-inch tires and enjoy the increased ground clearance.
